WHAT IS SCALING? Scaling is a dental cleaning procedure that targets both above and below the gumline to eliminate the sticky layer of bacteria (plaque) buildup. WHAT IS ROOT PLAINING? Root planing is cleaning of the root surface to smooth rough target areas, thereby eliminating plaque and biofilm and help the gums to reattach to the tooth.
When is dental scaling and root planing necessary? When you eat, small food particles combine with bacteria to form a layer on your teeth called plaque. If plaque is not properly cleaned, the bacteria can lead to gum inflammation. This causes your gums to recede from your teeth, creating gaps known as pockets. Plaque can become trapped in these pockets and cannot be removed with regular brushing. If gum disease is detected early and hasn’t affected the underlying structures beneath the gum line, scaling should be sufficient to address the issue. If the gaps between your gums and teeth are too deep, scaling and root planing may be necessary. These treatments can help prevent further damage and maintain oral health.
How is Scaling and Root planing procedure done? During your initial visit to FMS, your dentist will assess the amount of plaque buildup and examine your gums for any potential periodontal issues. Scaling eliminates all plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) from above and below the gumline, ensuring thorough cleaning down to the bottom of the pockets. This procedure uses a high-frequency vibrating instrument combined with water to effectively remove debris while protecting your tooth roots from damage. Depending on the extent of tartar and plaque buildup, as well as your sensitivity, scaling may cause discomfort. To minimize pain, a numbing gel or anesthetic injection is usually applied to the area. Root planing aims to smooth out rough surfaces and eliminate any bacteria located below the gums. During this procedure, the periodontist cleans deeply beneath the gums to remove plaque and tartar from the tooth roots. This helps prevent further plaque accumulation along the root surfaces and promotes the healing of gum tissue.
