Many patients have been advised that they are not eligible for dental implants. The presence of the sinus cavity and the diminished bone density in the posterior maxilla can make it challenging to place implants behind the first premolar. Pterygoid implants offer a solution for patients with severely resorbed jawbones, delivering minimal surgical trauma and optimal oral function. By utilizing the pterygomaxillary structures for stability, these implants are angled to engage the pterygoid process, the pyramidal plate of the palatine bone, or both. This approach has proven successful in supporting a complete-arch fixed prosthesis.
What are Pterygoid Implants Pterygoid implants are a type of dental implant designed to be placed in the pterygoid bone area, located at the back of the upper jaw near the pterygoid process of the sphenoid bone. These implants are used primarily in cases of severe bone loss or resorption in the upper jaw where traditional implants might not be viable. By anchoring into this dense bone area, pterygoid implants can provide stable support for dental prosthetics, allowing for successful restoration even with limited bone availability.
Vrielinck L, Politis C, Schepers S, Pauwels M, and Naert I conducted a study on the use of customized drill guides for image-based planning and clinical validation of zygoma and pterygoid implant placement in patients with significant bone atrophy. Their preliminary results, published in the *International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery* in 2003 (Vol. 32, Issue 1, Page 7), detail a prospective clinical follow-up study. Graves SL proposed the pterygoid plate implant as a solution for rehabilitating the posterior maxilla. His work, published in the *International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry* in 1994 (Vol. 14, Issue 6, Page 51), highlights its effectiveness in addressing this specific issue.
