EARLY CHILDHOOD CARIES
Early Childhood Caries is characterized by having one or more decayed (with or without cavitation), missing (due to decay), or filled tooth surfaces in any primary tooth of a preschool-aged child, from birth to 71 months old.
It is a significant oral health issue in children from birth up to 71 months of age.
The etiology of early childhood caries is multifactorial and is mainly attributed to time specific interaction of microorganisms with sugar on a tooth surface.
Dietary habits are crucial in the development of early childhood caries. Infant feeding practices, including:
- Frequent exposure to sugary foods
- Regular snacking
- Consuming sweetened drinks before bed
- Inadequate oral hygiene routines
Preventive measures that are to be followed are
- Brushing twice a day with fluoridated toothpaste
- Regular mouth cleansing
- Changing dietary habits
